    Strategic Guide: Russia-Mercosur Trade Ties

The recent 13th Meeting of the Brazil-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, held in Brasilia on May 25, 2026, underscores the importance of this bilateral relationship, which reached USD 10.9 billion in 2025, consolidating a pattern of trade that is highly specialized but politically significant. Proof of this is that on May 26, according to the Russian Embassy in Argentina, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Brazil's Presidential Adviser for International Affairs, Celso Amorim, who heads the Brazilian delegation at the International Security Forum (May 26-29, 2026, in Moscow), where they agreed to carry out joint projects in the space sector and in peaceful nuclear energy. Brazilian exports to Russia in 2025 totaled USD 1.5 billion, while Russian exports to Brazil reached USD 9.4 billion, which shows a significant imbalance in Russia's favor. According to Itamaraty (Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Russia was "the main foreign supplier of mineral or chemical fertilizers and diesel", while Brazil sells it mainly meat and coffee. For its part, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship (MRECIC), in 2025 Argentina sold Russia seeds and oilseeds; meat and edible offal; fruit and edible fruits; milk and dairy products; eggs; natural honey and fish for USD 445.3 million, and bought mainly mineral fertilizers, cast iron and aluminum for a total of USD 356.6 million, with a trade surplus that is positive but not very significant, of almost USD 89 million.

Regional parallels and the potential for engaging Russia as a bloc

The pattern of trade relations between Brazil and Russia shows structural similarities with Russia's relationship with Argentina, outlining a regional model of Moscow's commercial engagement with Mercosur, although with much smaller volumes in the case of Argentina, which does not reflect the disparity in size among the economies of the Southern Cone and points to a political anchor, favorable to Brazil, that feeds it, as the two events held by Russia and Brazil in May, described above, show. Within Mercosur, much remains to be done to take advantage of engagement as a trading bloc, especially considering the significant Russian immigration that has been arriving in Argentina in recent years, which would make it possible to strengthen trade and investment ties. Complementing the technical and commercial approach among the Mercosur countries in negotiations with Russia could strengthen and balance trade.
